I coached Ms. Amanda Galonek in her second year of teaching, when she first told me she was using the GoalUP program. The GoalUP program dramatically influenced her students’ motivation and achievement. Ms. Galonek’s students achieved 150% of their academic goals and grew 130% in reading levels. Truly an inspiring achievement!
As a middle school special education teacher, many of my students are years behind their current grade level when it comes to reading. Unfortunately this is common at high risk schools across the country and undoubtedly related to the unfortunate statistic that 32 million adults in the U.S. still cannot read. To greatly improve their reading skills students deserve access to the power of individualized goal setting; they deserve GoalUP. For me and for my students, it is imperative that tools are available to help compel them to set and achieve goals around reading so that they can experience the power and confidence that comes from becoming an educated member of society. GoalUP believes in personal growth, believes in kids, believes in teachers, believes in parents, and believes in our future.
Quintyn pointing to his record breaking word mastery score in reading was the only student to hit the year end grand prize for word mastery. According to his mother ‘the program is the only thing I hear him talk about when I ask how his school days are going. I have no doubt it is what keeps him motivated to go to school each morning. I have never seen him so excited about school as when he won the ipod nano.
Having tangible extrinsic rewards is essential for students. So often we assume that the value of an education will be enough to motivate students in school. And for some, it is. However, most students need goals with foreseeable benchmarks to encourage them into positive habits. As a teacher I can see the importance of a program like this for parents and families.
Extrinsic rewards, when done thoughtfully and in collaboration with your child, can provide motivation and meaning for your child to explore new opportunities for growth, and develop discipline. GoalUP is a wonderful platform conscious parents can use to turn the mundane into a game, support competition with self, and eliminate drama within the family. This program can also help parents stay consistent in guiding their child’s progress which builds trust in the child and gives them an experience of being reliably seen.
